Soviet scientists joked that somebody had made a “political decision” to end UFO sightings in the USSR

Mostly redacted CIA records capture a rare Cold War commiseration between American and Soviet meteorologists over weather balloons being mistaken for aliens

In the mid-’70s, the tension between the United States and the Soviet Union had cooled to the point where members of their respective scientific communities met to exchange ideas. A CIA report in CREST details one such meeting, though “details” is something of a misnomer.

What little remains captures an exchange between what appears to be two meteorologists, with the Soviet asking their American counterpart if they ever have to deal with reports of UFO sightings.

As in the United States, weather balloons take the blame, though the scientist does manage to sneak in a somewhat sinister observation about Soviet political life.

Even aliens don’t mess with the Kremlin, one supposes. The full exchange is embedded below:
