Pursuant to the North Carolina Public Records Law, I hereby request the following records for the last five years:
Maintenance records
inspection reports
air quality tests related to HVAC systems
capital improvement reports for all district schools
As background, this request is filed as part of a journalism project looking at HVAC systems across schools in the United States, and similar requests are being filed in additional school districts.
If you have summary reports or other documents that are likely to include largely similar information and are easier to provide, I’m willing to accept those as a substitute. I can be reached at 267-442-8994 and am happy to discuss the scope of my request.
According to the statute, this request should be acted upon as soon as possible, but in no event later than the third business day following receipt of this letter. If access to the records I requested is going to take longer, please contact me so we can work out a reasonable date.
The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available, or CD-ROM if not.

I wanted to follow up on the following North Carolina Public Records Law request, copied below, and originally submitted on Nov. 15, 2021. Please let me know when I can expect to receive a response.

I called and talked to someone about the request made of our school
system, I informed them that we had no such formal records that were
easily pulled and it would take me a little time to get any information
together. I also let said person know that we work on a work order system
and I would have to speak with our tech department to see how I could
acquire the information requested, which I have done. I will attempt to
continue to gather records and upload them to you as soon as possible. I
also work on the equipment you are asking for information about so I do
have to go into the field often which is the other reason this request will
take a little longer than expected.

I have compiled what little we have of the information we have into a
folder, our maintenance records would be in the form of the work orders, I
have no inspection reports other than fire marshal, boiler safety inspector
and DPI inspections which does not fall in the realm of the request. I
have sent you the air quality test we had performed in the beginning of
this year and I simply do not have any capital improvement reports. I did
send you a document I created to answer the many questions I am constantly
asked which is updated with all the most recent repairs in all facilities
except for 5 wall mounted unit replacements at the middle school. If you
have any questions please let me know.
