UNENCRYPTED INTRODUCTION

Good afternoon,

Thank you for following up on your FOIA request. Unfortunately, DMV has no record of your original request. However, the DMV’s FOIA office has received this request on March 28, 2022. You will receive a response on or before Monday April 4, 2022.

DMV FOIA Office

From: Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles

Tom Nash with Jordan,

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) received your request for
information on March 28, 2022, pursuant to the Virginia Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA). Specifically, you seek:

1. Procedures on handling Banned words ,symbols or ideals for custom
motor vehicle license plates

2. a list of banned words or combination of the effect or symbols
which is disallowed for use

In response to request number 1, after a review of DMV’s records, attached
you will find the New Revised Personalized Plate Issuance Guidelines.

In response to request number 2, DMV has provided a list of rejected
personalized plates for 2019, 2020, and 2021 through mid-October. As part
of an update to procedures, DMV stop maintaining this list in October 2021.
If you wish to seek any additional years, the raw data needed to provide
the plates, is contained in DMV’s computer database. DMV is able to
compile data and run reports to create a record providing the information
you seek in this request. To do so would require the expenditure of
resources, for which DMV would charge a fee to recover its actual costs
based on an hourly rate for the responding employee’s time plus any
programming, data and duplication costs. DMV will provide you a cost
estimate to produce a report containing this information. If you would like
to proceed with an ad hoc request to obtain the information you seek,
please complete the attached form and contact Tara Pyatt, Use Agreement
Program and Compliance Manager, via email at tara.pyatt@dmv.virginia.gov.
She will be able to assist you with that process.

Thank you,

DMV FOIA Office
