To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

A list of all personalized license plates that were rejected by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles for the year 2013.

If available, please also include:
- The reason for the rejection
- The vehicle make and model
- The city and / or county where the applicant's vehicle would be registered

Please exclude any personally-identifiable information (names, addresses, etc.).

I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 15 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Chris Meller

Mr. Meller,

Thank you for your SC Freedom of Information Act request. Unfortunately, we cannot provide the information you requested. DMV does not keep records of rejected applications for personalized license plates. We send the applications back to the customer and no information is entered into our data base.

Please contact us again if you have any questions.

Thank you, Ms. Smolen.

In that case, are there any word or phrase lists or other basic guidelines the DMV uses to evaluate applications?

Mr. Meller,

We do not have a list that we can print for you. Our system has been programmed not to use some letter/number combinations, but it isn't something we can print.
