New York City Subway history

To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the New York State Freedom of Information Law (1977 N.Y. Laws ch. 933), I hereby request the following records related to the New York City subway system:

1. Maps or diagrams of New York City subway routes in the City's records.

2. Design plans, proposals, correspondences, and other documents regarding the design of NYC subway maps for the public (e.g. Massimo Vignelli's map design for the NYCTA in 1972, if available).

Background: The Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) and the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT) were combined with the already city-owned Independent Subway System (IND) in 1940. From this date, all lines were owned and operated by the city under the New York City Board of Transportation (NYCBOT) until the formation of the NYC Transit Authority (NYCTA) in 1953 and its eventual affiliation under the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA) in 1968.

Therefore, the City should have primary records at least from 1940 through 1953, and as early as 1932 pertaining to the IND lines. Please also include any records the City has from other years.

If any of these documents are known to be in the possession of other agencies or jurisdictions (perhaps New York State would have more documentation regarding NYCTA-era maps?), please also refer me to that agency.

I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 5 business days, as the statute requires.
