Dear Mr. Maass:

This is to acknowledge your California Public Records Act request wherein you request a copy of communications and related records involving the University of California Office of the President and the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill (2015).

The appropriate UC Office of the President offices are being notified of your request. Records identified as responsive to your request will be reviewed, and made available for your access, in accordance with relevant law and University policy. The estimated date of production is 8 weeks, which will vary according to the nature, complexity, and/or length of the request.

Although the requested records have not yet been fully gathered and reviewed, it is possible that the requested material may contain information exempt from disclosure pursuant to the Public Records and Information Practices Acts. For your information, the California Public Records Act allows agencies to make records available "upon payment of fees covering direct costs of duplication", (Government Code Section 6253(b)). The charge is $0.20 per page for copies. Pre-payment is required before release of public records. If you prefer, you may inspect the records in person prior to obtaining copies. Thank you for the response, however, I must insist that you do another search for records.

On Feb. 26, 2015, the US Department of Homeland Security published a statement on the DHS appropriations bill written by President Napolitano via its public RSS news feed. This statement was labeled as originating from University of California Office of the President, with Press Secretary Steve Montiel's ucop.edu email address listed as the press contact.

Dave Maass
