To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

All records or communications (including, but not limited to: correspondence, reports, arrest records, notes, documents, audio/video tapes) related to the Secret Service's 1975 investigation into the American Indian Movement (AIM) in relation to President Gerald Ford's September 19, 1975 visit to Oklahoma. I am particularly interested in any records related to AIM member Darlene Pearl Nichols, also known as "Kamook" or "Ka-Mook" Nichols.

Ms. Nichols, along with four other AIM members, was arrested on September 10th, 1975 outside of Wellington, Kansas on federal weapons charges. Per federal sources, the group was moving guns and hand grenades from the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota to Shawnee, Oklahoma.

A October 2, 1975 article in El Informador (the paper of record in Guadalajara, Mexico) indicates that Ms. Nichols's arrest was connected to a Secret Service investigation. The article quotes Secret Service spokesperson James Burke, who says that the investigation began after a prison informant alerted staff to a former inmate's plans to connect with AIM and conduct some kind of disruption or violent action during the president's Oklahoma trip.

I have attached relevant historical news articles describing Ms. Nichols's arrest and the Secret Service's public comments about the investigation.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Meg Showalter
