To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

Please provide copies of any and all photos of the Surveyor 5 lunar lander. Very few photos of the lander itself are publicly available. Please include any photos of its assembly, the completed lander from all view points and being loaded into the rocket. This is not a request for images from the moon. Please provide these in high resolution digital format if possible. In reply to a previous FIOA request, NASA indicated that all material from the mission was turned over to NARA.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Dear Sherman McCall,

I just wanted to reach out to you in regards to your request on records
relating to Surveyor 5 lunar lander. I've looked in our departmental
records for this request and I can't locate one. Is there someone specific
who spoke with or was it just FOIAonline?

If you are still interested in this request, I can forward it to the
departments who can help you with your search.

Please let us know how you would like to proceed.

Sincerely,
Alexis Bucher

Dear Alexis.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I'm new to using Muckrock. Apparently they don't notify when a message is received.

I started this with NASA. They said they didn't have any material and it was all turned over to NARA.

I have not spoken to anyone at NARA about this request, only submitted a muckrock request.

Thank you so much for your attention. Please proceed.

Dear Mr. McCall,

This is in response to your Freedom of Information Act request (23-11470)
regarding any and all photos of the Surveyor 5 lunar lander. Your request
was received by our office on December 7, 2022. Your request was also sent
to the Still Pictures Branch; their office will respond separately.

Your request consists of a stated topic rather than describing specific
documents, and therefore is not reasonably specific enough for us to be in
a position to easily locate documents responsive to your request. Although
our facility holds records created by NASA, they are not described at a
level that would reasonably lead us to a particular series that would
include the photographs you seek. We recommend browsing the series that
mention Surveyor here: Search Results for Surveyor in RG 255.
<https://catalog.archives.gov/search?q=Surveyor&recordGroupNumber=255&levelOfDescription=series>
If you find records of interest, please reach out to
Archives2Reference@nara.gov for information relating to availability.

It may also be helpful to reach out to the Records Officer for NASA to
determine if Surveyor photographs were accessioned to a particular National
Archives facility. In your request, we recommend asking for both transfer
and accession numbers. Here is their contact information:

This concludes the processing of your request.

You have the right to file an administrative appeal in writing via regular
U.S. mail or email. Your appeal should be received within ninety (90)
calendar days from the date of this letter and it should explain why you
believe this response does not meet the requirements of the Freedom of
Information Act. Please address it to the Deputy Archivist of the United
States (ND), National Archives and Records Administration, 8601 Adelphi
