To Whom It May Concern:

This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:

I am requesting all State Department documents pertaining to Zvonko Busic, born Jan. 23, 1946 and died Sep. 1, 2013. Proof of death is not required because it was widely reported. See the Washington Post obituary here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/zvonko-busic-skyjacker-who-championed-croatian-independence-dies-at-67/2013/09/06/e08d2612-1703-11e3-be6e-dc6ae8a5b3a8_story.html

"Zvonko Busic, a Croatian nationalist who served 32 years in prison in the United States for hijacking a plane and planting explosives that killed a policeman, has committed suicide. He was 67.

Police said Mr. Busic was found dead Sept. 1 at his home in Rovanjska, near the coastal Croatian town of Zadar. They said he left a suicide note."

I am requesting files from between January 1, 1975 and the date this request is processed.

I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Zack Sampson

From: Savage, Timothy M

I am beginning to review some documents found in a search as a result of your FOIA request.

Before I do, however, I have one question. If a document also contains material that is not relevant to your request, do you agree that we may excise that/those portion(s) of the document that are not relevant to your interests? Documents often contain a variety of subjects, e.g., weekly embassy "round-up" cables touching on different subjects.

Excluding non-relevant material (if any) in FOIA reviews will expedite the process, particularly by eliminating the need to coordinate with other offices or agencies on matter that do not pertain to your specific request.

Please reply by return email to confirm that you concur or do not concur in our redaction non-relevant material from your request.

Mr. Savage,

The case number you have provided is not a Department of State Case number. The Department of State keeps track of requests by case numbers. In the future when you request a status on a case please provide the correct case number in the subject line of your message. This will not only make it easier to find your case, it will facilitate a quick answer to your inquiry.
