Liberate 13,000+ pages of FBI documents on Mario Cuomo's corrupt Chief-of-Staff!

Share Embed Help

Chris Cuomo infamously lost his cool after being called “Fredo” by a heckler. It was the latest re-opening of a longstanding wound to Cuomo family’s pride: the lingering accusation that New York’s three-term Governor Mario Cuomo, father of both Chris Cuomo and current Governor Andrew Cuomo, had connections to La Cosa Nostra. Mario Cuomo was notoriously sensitive to the appearance of mob ties and consistently denied them.

Skeletons remained in the closets of the Governor’s mansion, however. One of the most glaring was the membership of Gen. Vito Castellano (ret.) in the inner circle of New York’s Governors (dating back to Malcolm Wilson) and two years into Mario Cuomo’s administration.

Castellano’s fall from grace came swiftly as he was swept up in the WedTech scandal and, as importantly, his known family connection to the boss of the Gambino Crime Family, Paul Castellano. Unable to salvage his public career, Castellano became a cooperator in the WedTech prosecutions that followed.

After Vito Castellano’s death, I requested the FBI’s file on Vito Castellano, and it is voluminous: over 13,000 pages. What as yet unknown secrets are in those records? Help find out by donating to the cost of duplicating the records!

From: T. McElwee

To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

Records relating to or mentioning either of two individuals from the New York National Guard (both deceased):

Maj. Gen. Vito Joseph Castellano (ret.)
born: May 21, 1925
died: August 28 2019
First 5 digits of SSN: 072-18

Maj. Gen. Bernard Gordon Ehrlich (ret.)
born: October 1928 (day unknown)
died: March 7, 2014
First 5 digits of SSN: 103-22
BOP Register Number: 14196-054

Proofs of death are attached as PDF's. Records concerning Castellano and Ehrlich as subjects should be released, as privacy concerns under FOIA Exemption 6 and 7 as well as the Privacy Act are now moot.

Please conduct a search of the Central Records System, including but not limited to the ELSUR Records System, the Microphone Surveillance (MISUR) Indices, the Physical Surveillance (FISUR) Indices, and the Technical Surveillance (TESUR) Indices, for both main-file records and cross-reference records for all relevant names, individuals, agencies and companies.

If any potentially responsive records have been destroyed and/or transferred to NARA, then I request copies of the destruction or transfer slips as well as any other documentation relating to, mentioning or describing said transfer or destruction, to include but not be limited to confirmation that the Bureau has no other copies of said records.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

T. McElwee

Re: FOIPA Request No.: 1450343-000 (subjects: Maj. Gen. Vito Joseph Castellano (ret.); Maj. Gen. Bernard Gordon Ehrlich (ret.))

To whom it may concern:

I am requesting an update regarding the above captioned FOIPA request.

Per letter from the Bureau, I was quoted 13,798 pages of records potentially responsive to the subject of the request. I was given a quote of $415 for cost.

In response, MuckRock sent a $415 check on my behalf January 31, 2020.

I checked FBI's Vault website for the above cationed FOIPA Request number, and there is no indication that this request is in the system.

While I understand the dilemma RIDS and the Bureau are in concerning coronavirus restrictions, I will note that this request was made months in advance of the emergency measures.

My thanks for your attention to this matter,
T. McElwee
