Good Morning,

Upon checking on the status of your request, initial review of the records received indicated that additional searches were necessary. The NIH offices that have been contacted for records searches have advised that your request is too broad and they suggest that you narrow the scope of your search.

Are there specific records, or is there something in particular that you are looking for that may make it less of a burden to search for and review your request records?

Thank you.

From: JPat Brown

Mr. Bordine, hello!
Thank you for reaching out - it is my understanding that agencies keep internal histories of significant periods (we have done similar work around the CIA here: https://www.muckrock.com/project/declassifying-cias-internal-histories-240/), and I was hoping to find if the NIH had one specifically around the HIV/AIDS crisis and the agency's role. If the agency has a list of such histories, I'd happy cross-reference that to track down the one I'm looking for. If no such list exists, I'd accept whatever complete internal history of the agency exists (was one created for the 125th anniversary in 2012?).
Thanks again, and have a lovely weekend!

From: National Institutes of Health

Good Morning,
Thank you for your clarification. If all that you seek is an internal NIH history, then you may find what you are looking for on the following NIH webpage: https://history.nih.gov/NIHInOwnWords/index.html This page chronicles the most critical elements of NIH involvement in the HIV/AIDS crisis from 1981 to 1988.

If this does not help, the NIH can continue the expansive FOIA search, but in the interest of time, any other exacting specific explanation of the records you are attempting to locate would greatly improve the effectiveness of the search.

If that webpage provides you with the information you are seeking, then please confirm that you wish to withdraw your NIH FOIA request, given that the materials requested are already publicly available online.

Thank you.
