Dear FOIA Officer:

Pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

Case file, including complaints, interviews, reports, case notes, and closing summaries, for an investigation into disabled or improperly installed equalizer valves at oil wells operating on public lands in the Uinta Basin, Utah. The case was initiated by the BLM in or around May 2007, and eventually became a joint investigation with the OIG. The investigation resulted in a settlement on or around March 31, 2011 with Berry Petroleum Co., as reported in trade journals:
https://www.ogj.com/general-interest/government/article/17266535/blm-announces-record-settlement-in-oil-site-security-dispute

The OIG's case number was OI-OG-07-0359-1, Title BERRY PETROLEUM-VERNAL BLM, closed 4/12/11.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

As a freelance journalist, I expect to be placed in your news media category. As evidence of my publication record, here are links to some of my stories:

https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2018/02/wildlife-watch-sea-cucumbers-illegal-wildlife-trade-coral-reefs/

Furthermore, I request a fee waver on the grounds that this report is likely to contribute significantly to public understanding of the operations of the government — i.e., how the government polices fraud, abuse, and waste in the energy sector.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request.

I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Maraya Cornell

ATTENTION: MARAYA CORNELL.

Her request listed the preferred method of delivery to this address so I hope she gets this.
This is a response to her FOIA request for documents pertaining to an investigation by the Bureau of Land Management and Office of the Inspector General on disabled or improperly installed equalizer vales at oil wells operating on public lands.
In case it doesn't go through, I've gone ahead and mailed the response via the U.S. Postal Service.

I do not know if you received our response via email back on December 8, 2023. I also sent a hard copy of our response to MuckRock News, DEPT MR 79823, 411A Highland Ave, Somerville, MA 02144-2516 but I received it back from the post office today.
The sticker on the envelope reads: Return to Sender; Attempted Not Known; Unable to Forward.

I'm resending this email and will NOT send the hard copy.
