Pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

I am seeking records relating to the communication scholar, Herbert Irving Schiller (1919-2000), who conducted research on mass communication and international communication. He worked for many years at the University of California San Diego. Professor Schiller was also highly critical of U.S. foreign policy, particularly during the Cold War period, and he was an active member of international organizations that advocated for communication rights around the globe. Prof. Schiller's ideas were particularly influential during the New World Information and Communication Order ("NWICO") debates that took place within UNESCO during the 1970s and 1980s. Those debates focused primarily on media representations in the developing world, and culminated in the "Many Voices, One World" report by the MacBride Commission, which provided a set of recommendations for making global media representation more equitable.

I am seeking any records related to Professor Schiller or his work that may have been consulted, reviewed, assessed, or used by your agency.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.
