To Whom It May Concern:

This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:

I would like copies of all tweets deleted by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Twitter feed (@USDOT) from October 2011 to the present. This would include any tweets sent out on Twitter that were deleted or kept in draft form from the Twitter accounts @USDOT. This request also would include copies of any e-mails or correspondence regarding the drafting and deletion of these tweets.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

I am a journalist whose works have appeared in Slate, VICE, the Massachusetts Review, Kill Screen, and elsewhere. This FOIA request is part of research for an ongoing piece of journalistic work, and as such, I am requesting a fee waiver. I have submitted versions of this FOIA request to other agencies, including the Office of Government Ethics, and in the process, I have been granted this fee waiver without question.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Muira McCammon

Re: Freedom of Information Act Appeal, Case No. 2018-0012

Dear Darlene A. Wallace, Program Assistant, FOIA Division

Pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act (“FOIA”), 5 U.S.C. § 552, this letter seeks clarity regarding the status of my FOIA request. I filed a FOIA request on October 5, 2017. On October 10, 2017, the Department of Transportation acknowledged the request. I requested (1) records of any deleted tweets and any draft tweets from @USDOT and (2) emails that discuss the deletion of such tweets and emails that discuss the drafting of such tweets. By way of background, my research project focuses on tracing deletions in federal agencies’ twitter accounts, and part of that project includes assessing why agencies delete or change tweets. I am thus interested in exploring agencies’ social media policies and the reasons for tweet deletions.

In short, I'm asking for an update, because it's been awhile ...

Thank you,
Muira McCammon

Hi, Mr. Bell,

I have been interested and am still interested in receiving the documents tied to my initial request. I am also disturbed by the fact that after taking four years with my response, you gave me less than a month to reiterate my interest in receiving documents. This seems like truly questionable behavior, and I'd appreciate my original request being handled properly and to the best ability of your department. I've filed versions of this request with hundreds of agencies and am again expressing my frustration that this is how my request has been handled to date. I understand that you are attempting to help requestors, but the way that you can do that, in my case, is to fulfill my records request. Weeding people out this way by asking if they're still interested seems anti-democratic and against the grain of the FOIA.

Thank you,
