Case Number: 22-00873-F Subject: Any and all documents related to Bluestone (2019-2022) Dear William Fernandes:
This e-mail responds to your Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act (FOIA/PA) request dated April 29, 2022, addressed to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), FOIA/PA Unit, seeking access to information regarding the above subject.
We regret the delay in responding to your FOIA/PA request.  DEA is among the top six of all Department of Justice components that receive the largest number of FOIA/PA requests per year.  DEA received 1,603 requests in Fiscal Year 2022 and we have limited personnel resources to process such requests (see Department of Justice Annual FOIA Reports available at https://www.justice.gov/oip/reports-1).  We are experiencing a backlog of approximately 1,800 requests, which has impacted our ability to process your request in a timelier manner.
By letter dated July 18, 2022, our office advised that your request was overly broad and burdensome and required clarification for DEA to be able to conduct a records search.  To date, our office has not received a reformulated request.  As noted in our prior correspondence, please clarify the records sought and/or the offices to search for records.  If you are seeking contract records, you will need to provide the company name and the contract ID.
Given the passage of time and the changing needs of requesters, this communication is to confirm whether you are still interested in the documents you requested.  We ask that you please confirm your continued interest by written reply within 30 business days from the date of this communication and reference the above case number.  If this office does not receive confirmation of your continued interest and your reformulated request within the specified time frame, we will conclude that you do not wish to pursue this matter and your request will be administratively closed.  In the event that we administratively close your request, you may submit a new request at any time. Please e-mail your response to DEA.FOIA@dea.gov.
You may contact our FOIA Public Liaison at (571) 776-2300 for any further assistance and to discuss any aspect of your request.  Additionally, you may contact the Office of Government Information Services (OGIS) at the National Archives and Records Administration to inquire about the FOIA mediation services they offer.  The contact information for OGIS is as follows: Office of Government Information Services, National Archives and Records Administration, Room 2510, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, Maryland 20740-6001; e-mail at ogis@nara.gov; telephone at (202) 741-5770; toll free at 1-877-684-6448; or facsimile at (202) 741-5769.

From: William Fernandes

Hi Michael:

I was trying to obtain more information about 'Bluestones' but the DEA has a really infamous way of 'obstructing' FOIA in my opinion based on a very public history. I was wondering...might you have information to share on why this search failure is incorrect?

Any expert info you can provide would be helpful in the further governance of the agency.

Thanks
William
