A continuing dialog often ties recent work to artwork previously created. Paint appears both fluid and strict, self-organizing and ever evolving. The tension and intricacies of her work speak to the complexity of the evolutionary process. Viewers are encouraged to probe for meaning; creating their own narrative within an abstract landscape. It's been a year since we launched the MyNorfolk app/online portal and our redesigned norfolk.gov website! We want to make sure we're making it easy to find what you need, submit requests and more. Let us know how we're doing by taking these two surveys: MyNorfolk app/portal | Website Providing Skills and Hope For 11 years, the CARES T.E.A.M. has provided support, services, and a path to self-sufficiency for people returning to our community after justice system involvement. Qualifying participants find education and training, resume and interview skills, and assistance to obtain necessary documents such as birth certificates, Social Security cards and driver’s licenses. Support includes unlimited amounts of encouragement and kindness. In October, Norfolk expanded these services to even more people, including anyone with a criminal history, recent or long past, along with adults with child support cases who are non-custodial parents, and youth and young adults who are transitioning out of foster care. To see if you qualify, email or call Family Services Supervisor Madonna Flores at 757-664-7799. New Operational Hours Beginning November 2, Norfolk Public Library (NPL) will reopen three additional neighborhood branches and Recreation, Parks and Open Space (RPOS) will reopen indoor pools. Effective October 24, Slover Library will have new operating hours. Barron F. Black, Park Place and Van Wyck branch locations will operate two days a week. The Jordan-Newby and Mary D. Reservations are required. November is Adoption Month Thanks to the caring and compassionate Family Services Team at the Department of Human Services (DHS), the City of Norfolk leads the way in completed adoptions this year for the Eastern Region of Virginia. Team Norfolk finalized the most adoptions – 30 – of the 120 children who found forever homes in the Eastern Region. That total matches the number of adoptions completed by Norfolk’s DHS last year. Statewide, 858 children found permanent adoptive families. “Finalized adoptions mean forever families for children who would otherwise linger in foster care,” DHS Acting Director Denise Gallop wrote. “One child at a time!” Bland Street Gets Local Artist Flavor Local artist Mensah Bey worked with community volunteers to complete Gathering in Abundance, a street mural on Bland Street near the Five Points Intersection in the Norview neighborhood. The 100’ long, brightly colored artwork draws inspiration from West African Adinkra symbolism. Ideas of unity, togetherness, abundance, and cooperation are used to inspire growth in community, business, and relationships. The artwork also uses pedestrian movement and dance to evoke a sense of activity and caution when entering/exiting this side street to a busy and popular intersection. The project was supported by a grant from the Bloomberg Asphalt Art Initiative with funding awarded to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Virginia and Norfolk Arts. Connecting you to our urban, waterfront community Volume 31 | February 2021 Connecting you to our urban, waterfront community. Vaccinate Norfolk Beginning Monday, January 25, 2021, the Norfolk Department of Public Health (NDPH) expanded COVID-19 vaccination clinics to those who are eligible in Phase 1b. Virginia’s Phase 1b is defined as the vaccination of Frontline Essential Workers, people aged 65 years and older, people living in correctional facilities, homeless shelters and migrant labor camps, and people aged 16 through 64 years with a high risk medical condition or disability that increases their risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Norfolk residents who meet the Phase 1a or 1b eligibility requirements can preregister two ways*: Online at www.norfolk.gov/covid19vaccine Call 664-SHOT (7468) Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. *Eligible individuals are highly encouraged to use the online form due to long call wait times. NOTE: The preregistration process will add you to a waitlist within the specific phase in which you are eligible. Preregistration does not schedule you for a COVID vaccine appointment. Due to limited vaccine availability, it could take up to 4 to 8 weeks before you are notified to schedule your appointment. Individuals must bring to their appointment a form of identification such as a driver’s license and will be asked to show proof of qualification, such as a work ID, to verify eligibility. NDPH vaccination clinics are closed to the general public. Save Time! Use MyNorfolk! Residents are encouraged to utilize the MyNorfolk app and online portal for service requests, as Norfolk Cares call takers will be assisting the vaccine hotline.
