Pursuant to the New York State Freedom of Information Law (1977 N.Y. Laws ch. 933), I hereby request the following records:

I request all records and documents related to the congressional testimony of Thomas Galati, Chief, Intelligence Bureau, New York Police Department, on April 19, 2016 when he said that the New York Police Department is in possession of 67 iPhones whose encryption is locking out investigators. I also request all records and documents from the related criminal cases.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 5 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

An interim response, stating the request is being processed.

Our office (85 Broad Street) received a letter on May 3, which stated our request (#2016-PL-4553) was to be evaluated for FOIL exemptions. The case was assigned to Police Officer Halk, it said. Your office estimated the review would be completed and a determination issued around Aug 2.

Could your officce update us on the status of this request and possibly provide an estimated date of completion?

Additionally, I'd like to request that you waive any fees related to the search, review, or duplication of these records on the basis that my request was made in my professional capacity as an investigative reporter.

Thank you.
