To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the New York State Freedom of Information Law (1977 N.Y. Laws ch. 933), I hereby request the following records:

Notes, transcripts, hand-outs, worksheets, and/or testing materials used by Visiting Professor Carl Bernstein during his lectures for Journalism 390: The Presidency and the Press.

The requested records are described in a course syllabus previously released in response to Freedom of Information Law request #20140423JT, which was fulfilled on June 27 2014 by Records Access Officer Douglas Pancino:

— “Case study on LBJ and Vietnam” from Week 5

— “LBJ to early Nixon” from Week 6

— “The Washington press corp” from Week 7

— “Watergate: A seminal event in the history of the press and the White House” from Week 8

— “The long term impact of Watergate on the press and on our politics” from Week 9

— “Case studies: Carter and malaise, hostages” from Week 10

The requested records include any notes, handouts, worksheets, and/or reference materials personally used by Carl Bernstein to deliver the lectures and/or in-class discussions referred to in the list above.

The requested records also include copies of tests and quizzes used in the Journalism 390 course, including the “quiz on first readings” during Week 3, the “quiz” during Week 5, and the “midterm test” during Week 7.

I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 5 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

J.K. Trotter

Note: The request I submitted on June 27 2014 misspelled the Records Access Officer’s name. It is Douglas Panico, not Douglas Pancino.

Hi Allison,

Thank you for the attachments. I did have a question, though: My request included the following:

“The requested records also include copies of tests and quizzes used in the Journalism 390 course, including the ‘quiz on first readings’ during Week 3, the ‘quiz’ during Week 5, and the ‘midterm test’ during Week 7.”

I’m only seeing the midterm test in the fourth attachment. Were copies of the other quizzes unavailable (or are they buried in one of the attachments, and I overlooked them)?

Thanks a ton (and no rush).

I double-checked and the records you received are all the responsive
records that the University has.

Hope that helps.

Allison
