Pursuant to the North Carolina Public Records Law, I hereby request the following records:
A complete and accurate count of all transgender inmates currently in custody in the North Carolina Department of Corrections as mandated to be recorded by the Prison Rape Elimination Act including:
-the number of transgender women in custody
-the number of transgender women who are housed in men's facilities
-the number of transgender men in custody
-the number of transgender men who are housed in women's facilities
-the number of transgender people who are taking hormones
The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

To Whom It May Concern,
In response to your request dated April 2, we are providing the information below. The data provided has been gleaned from screening of offenders at intake and upon transfer in accordance with PREA 115.41, Screening for Risk of victimization and abusiveness.
"Transgender means a person whose gender identity (i.e., internal sense of feeling male or female) is different from the person's assigned sex at birth."
There are:
* 34 transgender female offenders in custody, all are housed at male facilities
* 2 transgender male offenders in custody, both are housed at a female facility
* Approximately 20 transgender offenders are taking hormones
