From: Matthew Petti
To Whom It May Concern:
Pursuant to the New Jersey Open Public Records Act, I hereby request the following records:
Documents regarding the "atrocious assault and battery" investigated by the Morristown Police Department and reported to the FBI on September 28, 1961.
An FBI memo from 1962 mentions that on the above date, a Morristown detective told the Bureau about someone arrested "on charges of atrocious assault and battery...The detective advised that on [DATE REDACTED], a call was received from the landlady at [ADDRESS REDACTED] reporting that a man had been found in a room severely beaten. This man was subsequently identified as [NAME REDACTED] later turned himself into the Morristown, New Jersey, Police Department, at which time he could not be interviewed because of his emotional condition...A doctor was called and [NAME REDACTED] was given sedatives and transferred to the Morristown County Jail."
You may find a copy of the memo attached below.
I am requesting the police report from that incident and any written communication to the FBI in September 1961.
The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 7 business days, as the statute requires.
Sincerely,
Matthew Petti
