To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the California's Sunshine Amendment (Cal. Const. Art. I, ยง 3(b)), I hereby request the following records:

Copies of all reports, lists, databases, or individual documents created since Jan. 1, 2009 that detail lawsuits brought against the police department. This should include any documentation mechanism your department uses to track lawsuits. It should also include any documents that the department submits to local, state, or federal agencies listing the number and/or status of lawsuits brought against the department.

This request should be construed to include documents compiled quarterly, annually, or in other increments as well as documents or databases that contain responsive information over a longer time span.

I request that all fees be waived for this request because I am a journalist -- employed by the Boston Globe and MuckRock -- and intend to use the requested information to educate the public.

I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Todd Feathers

Hello,

I would like to revise the below-mentioned request so as to reduce the burden on your agency of retrieving the records. I had requested:

"Copies of all reports, lists, databases, or individual documents created since Jan. 1, 2009 that detail lawsuits brought against the police department. This should include any documentation mechanism your department uses to track lawsuits. It should also include any documents that the department submits to local, state, or federal agencies listing the number and/or status of lawsuits brought against the department. This request should be construed to include documents compiled quarterly, annually, or in other increments as well as documents or databases that contain responsive information over a longer time span."

After corresponding with other police departments, I would like to revise my reduce my request to the following:

A single list of all civil rights and tort lawsuits brought against the Los Angeles Police Department since Jan. 1, 2009 that have since been closed and are no longer pending litigation. If possible, I would also like the disposition for those closed cases and any settlement or judgment amounts paid as a result.

Thank you for your help, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Hello,

Is there a phone number that I could use to reach Mr. Feathers to speak
about this request? I just have two quick questions that would be easier
to handle over the phone than by email. I just want to make sure that we
are getting you the correct information.

Hello,

This is a follow up to my conversation with Todd today. Here is the
requested spreadsheet. It contains all LAPD cases since 2005. If there is
a "close date" listed on the row and a blank in the dollar amount, it means
the case was resolved in the City's favor, with no money being awarded to
the plaintiff. Please let me know if you have any follow up questions.
