To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Michigan Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

A summary of arrests made between 1/1/20 to present, or stopping at 12/31/22.

I'm not interested in individual arrest report documents, but a summary of all arrests during that period with as many details about the arrests as possible.

Please provide these in the format in which they are currently stored in your system, which may be a database, spreadsheet, CSV file, or similar.

If any part of this request is denied, please cite the relevant provisions in state law which justify the denial.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 5 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Josh Chamberlain

Hi Jack,

Thanks for the response. My request may have been unclear. Are you indicating that DPD does not keep records of arrests in a table, file, database, or anything like that?

From: Detroit Police Department

Correct, that is what they have informed me so.

Hi Jack,

When an arrest is made, documentation or paperwork of some kind is generated—the kind of thing that would show up in ICHAT. I'm not aware of any U.S. police agencies that do not generate criminal records.

What wording could I use in my request to refer to those records?

Thanks,
Josh

From: Detroit Police Department

There are records of arrests, you indicated you wanted a summary and specifically indicated you did not want the underlying records.
