To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Massachusetts Public Records Law, M.G.L. c.66, §10, I hereby request the following records:

All applications for business, retail, restaurant, and real estate permits in Boston's Lower Allston neighborhood submitted between January 1st, 2010 and the date on which this request is processed.

I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as we believe this request is in the public interest, as suggested but not stipulated by the recommendations of the Massachusetts Supervisor of Public Records. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.

I expect the request to be filled in an accessible format, including for screen readers, which provide text-to-speech for persons unable to read print. Files that are not accessible to screen readers include, for example, .pdf image files as well as physical documents.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Anna Geary-Meyer

Ms Geary-Meyer:

The City of Boston is currently reviewing the request for public records
that you submitted on November 4, 2014. You requested the following
documents:

"All applications for business, retail, restaurant, and real estate permits
in Boston's Lower Allston neighborhood submitted between January 1st, 2010
and the date on which this request is processed."

Due to the broad nature of your request, the City of Boston is still in the
process of identifying the requested materials and determining an estimate
of the cost. We will notify you as soon as we are able to do so, and we
will inform you of the fee that is required.

Please be informed that although your request is addressed to the Mayor's
Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing (MOCAL), it appears that you are
seeking several categories of documents that are not within the
jurisdiction of MOCAL and not in MOCAL's possession (e.g. real estate
permits). MOCAL strictly handles matters involving public entertainment in
the City. It would be helpful if you could describe the documents you are
looking for with more specificity so that I can make sure the proper city
departments are notified of your request. Additionally, if you would like
to alter or narrow the scope of your request in any way, please feel free
to contact me.

Sincerely,

Gabrielle

Hi Gabrielle,

Thanks for your response. Specifically, I'm interested in looking at the economic development of Lower Allston via applications (whether successful or not) for new businesses or events in the neighborhood.

I would like to alter my request as follows:

All applications for any permit within MOCAL's jurisdiction in Boston's Lower Allston neighborhood submitted between January 1st, 2012 and the date on which this request is processed.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Anna

From: Gabrielle Farrell

Hello,

Your request now seeks:

*All applications for any permit within MOCAL's jurisdiction in Boston's
Lower Allston neighborhood submitted between January 1st, 2012 and the date
on which this request is processed*.

The Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing has documentation, which can
be sorted by neighborhood - please clarify which areas you consider to be
"Lower Allston." Can you please specify the boundaries of the area you are
interested in?

Also, you request "the date on which *this request* is processed." Is this
in reference to the public records request itself, or the applications you
are requesting?

Thank you,

Gabrielle

Hi Gabrielle,

To clarify, I am requesting only the applications that you have received between January 1st, 2012 and the date on which your agency processes my request. If it is processed today, I would expect to receive documents dated between 1/1/12 and 11/25/14.

Per Wikipedia, Lower Allston "consists of streets north of Cambridge Street and the Turnpike, all the way to the Charles River. It extends westward to Everett Street and eastward to Windom Street."

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Best,
Anna

From: Gabrielle Farrell

Hello,

Would you be open to receiving applications within a particular zip code as
opposed to by street? Our system sources this information by zip code more
efficiently.

Best,

Gabrielle
