To Whom It May Concern:
I'm a journalist working on a possible piece about Freedom of Information Law.
Pursuant to the state Freedom of Information Act, G.L.M. c.4, €7,
clause 26th, I hereby request copies of records on Freedom of
Information Act filings in Amherst. Specifically, I am looking for:
Documentation on how many requests were filed in 2009.
The resolution (approved, denied) of those requests.
The names of the requesting individuals and/or organizations.
Ideally, I would like the cover-letter responses by Amherst to FOIL
requests submitted in 2009, which I believe would include all of the
above information. I agree to pay reasonable search and duplication
fees for the processing of this request in an amount not to exceed
$10.
In the event that fees do exceed $10, I would be grateful if you would
inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I
would prefer the request filled electronically, but hard copies are
acceptable if more convenient.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter.
I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10
business days, as the statute requires.

Hi Michael,
We lost our power yesterday so couldn't get back to you right away, but I've just gone through my records and if I photocopy the requests (2 per page as they're on half sheets), it'll come out to 13 copies. We charge 20 cents per copy, so that would total $2.60. Then we'd add our time into that figure at $21.00/hr, and between the time I took already searching and the time it would take to photocopy, it should run no more than 15 minutes ($5.25). Therefore, total cost to you would be $7.85. If this is acceptable, please mail a check payable to "Town of Amherst" to: Town Clerk, 4 Boltwood Ave, Amherst, MA 01002, Attention: Susan Audette. Also please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
If for some reason you'd like each request on its own page, then the 13 pages would become 26 at $5.20, making the total $10.45.
