The impact of anti-trans federal action

We’re going beyond the headlines to uncover and preserve public records that reveal the real-world effects of anti-trans policies.

The Trans Journalists Association and MuckRock have partnered to help journalists document and report on the Trump administration’s actions targeting trans communities.

What we’ve been doing

We’ve filed more than 65 requests with both federal and state entities over the past month. Our inquiries include:

How the government has responded

Our first completed request came from the California Department of Education, which provided letters from the U.S. Department of Education regarding an investigation into state-mandated resources and protections for LGBTQ+ students.

We’ve also heard back from ten states that don’t have any responsive records of the U.S. Attorney General coordinating with state AGs to comply with Executive Order 14190 and take action against K-12 teachers who acknowledge transgender students’ identities.

How you can help

Our biggest need is for suggestions of what documents to FOIA. You can submit your ideas via Google Forms.

State agencies are currently more responsive than federal entities, so we’re especially interested in pursuing documents that state or local governments are creating in response to federal action.

Suggestions related to arts, sports, business and other areas that aren’t currently reflected in our requests are highly encouraged.
