Mr. Morisy:

I just became aware of the request below. FOIA requests are made electronically through our electronic portal (the most efficient method of making a request) or by submission to the FOIA Officer. I am the current FOIA Officer although I was not so on the date of the first email in the thread. As the first email in the thread bears a 2013 date and the follow-ups appear to be electronically generated, I wanted to ensure that you are still interested in pursuing the request and to clarify certain items, such as the time period for which you desire records.

Pursuant to the District of Columbia Freedom of Information Act of 1974, D.C. Code Ann. § 2-531 et seq. ("D.C. Act"), I hereby request the following records:

A copy of any public records requests for ShotSpotter reports, documents, or other information submitted between June 1, 2013 and the date that this request is processed.

I also request the fist 10 pages of any written communications, or 10 communications (for example, emails) between this department and Andras Petho, Dan Keating, David S. Fallis, or other representatives of the Washington Post in regards to the ShotSpotter system.

There has been some confusion on this request as the communications have been going through an email mailbox which is not used for processing FOIA requests. Until your request is assigned to one of our specialists, you should be sending emails to my email box to ensure receipt and response.

I want to clarify a few points as to your request. As to the date of the requested records, based on what is below, the date range will be November 18, 2013 through May 27, 2016.

Your request indicates that you want communications with certain specified Washington Post employees and any other Washington Post employees. Such communications would be by email. However, we need specific email addresses as we cannot search for emails sent generally to Washington Post mailboxes. If you do not know the specific email addresses to whom the emails would have sent, I would propose that we do a search of identified MPD mailboxes using the key word “ShotSpotter” and the names of specific employees you mentioned and those in the article and “ShotSpotter” and “Washington Post.”

Please advise if the date range and the last search method would be acceptable or if you would propose some other modification.
