Pursuant to the California Public Records Act, I hereby request the following records:

Requesting the cause, age, and manner of death of homeless residents of Ventura County for the years 2018 and 2019. I see that 2019 has been published without ages.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Thank you for your inquiry. The Medical Examiner’s Office (MEO) does not officially track Ventura County’s homeless deaths. We have record of homeless deaths only known to the MEO. I must reiterate, these are the “known” deaths to the MEO, this is not exhaustive of all county deaths. For all homeless Ventura County deaths, you need to contact the county epidemiologist at the office of Vital Stats at Ventura County Public Health. The known deaths from the MEO are those that are reported to us. The MEO only accepts cases that fall under our jurisdiction. This is approximately one third of all county deaths. There are many cases that our office declines if the death occurred in the hospital under medical care after 24 hours of care and of natural causes. Thus, there are undoubtedly deaths of unsheltered people who fall under these criteria. Please contact the office of Vital Stats or the California Dept. of Public Health to retrieve the data you need.
