Hello:

In response to your Freedom of Information Law (“FOIL”) request, received on October 24, 2019 as follows:

"Any and all records pertaining to the death of Sue Barlach (married name Dershowitz). On New Year’s Eve, 1983, she drowned in the East River, in an apparent suicide. Date of death: June 12, 1987."

Please be advised that the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (“OCME”) does not release decedent records/autopsy reports pursuant to FOIL.

If you are a family member you may submit a Letter of Request to our Records Department. The Letter of Request should include: (1) your name, (2) your familial relationship to the decedent, (3) the decedent’s name, (4) the decedent’s ME Case Number, (5) a return address, and (5) your signature. There is no online form and we do not accept requests via email or fax.

If you are a non family member in order to receive a copy of these records from a medical examiner case file, you may submit the records request with an original, notarized authorization from decedent’s next-of-kin that such records may be released to you (next-of-kin are spouse/domestic partner, and blood relatives 1st cousin or closer). The authorization must also contain the authorizer’s relationship to the decedent; if the authorizer’s relationship to the decedent is legal (e.g., Executor, Administrator, Power of Attorney) rather than familial, a copy of the documentation establishing that relationship (e.g., Letters Testamentary, Letters of Administration, Power of Attorney + Letters of Administration/Testamentary) must accompany the authorization.

The written request for decedent records, along with the requisite authorization (and other documents, as applicable), should be submitted by mail to:

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner
