Currently, we (the NHP) do not utilize Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR’s), either mobile or stationary.

According to an article in from 2012, the NHP had four assigned in Aug 2009; which we no longer have, and we do not have data for them.  It has been many years since the NHP utilized such technology.

The NHP has purchased the Axon Fleet 3, however we do not use the ALPR function, we use it as an in car video camera system.  I do not see in the article where is stated the NHP is piloting their ALRP technology.

Now retired lieutenant, Chris LaPraire was listed on a roster for AAMVA’s License Plate Reader Working Group.  He had an interest in all products related to the future technologies tied to anything AXON/Taser/BWC/In-Car Camera related.

Reference the article that mentions a license plate reader at the CA/NV border, this device/tool is not owned or operated by the Nevada Highway Patrol.  Any information gathered from it was shared from another agency.

To answer previous questions that you shared, we do not have any training or policies on the use of ALPR’s.  This is due to the fact that we do not use them, if in the future, we do decide to utilize that technology, training and policy/directives will be given and implemented prior.

Furthermore, we do not have any agreements that I know of with other agencies on information sharing based upon ALRP’s; just as we do not have a written agreement from other agencies on missing persons/ATL’s/wanted person information on those possible traveling on our roadways.  I am not aware of the practices of the other agencies in our state or that border our state.

I hope this clears up any of the confusion, let me know if you need anything further.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you.
Sincerely,
