An interim response, stating the request is being processed.

From: Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency — DARPA

Good afternoon Sir/Ma'am:

I am reaching out to see if you would be willing to narrow the scope of your FOIA request 19-F-1917? The component conducting
the search asked if there was a specific record type ie. emails or contracts; additionally you have listed OpenBSD or www.openbsd.org; are you
wanting to search for the mentioning of the website or company? As your request stands, it is very broad and merely mentioning OpenBSD
software over the span of two decades could exist in multiple locations and could result in high volumes of records requiring numerous
consultations to multiple offices for release determinations.

Or would you be willing to narrow the scope to specific record types that you are interested in?

Thank you.

Hello Ms. Guimont,

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate the determination. However, I would like to respectfully forego narrowing the scope for this request, as I am looking for all records mentioning/pertaining to OpenBSD.

Thanks, and please let me know if you need anything else from my end.

From: J Ader

Hi Ms. Summa,

My name is Jake Ader and I gave you a phone call the other day regarding a follow up on my FOIA with your agency. I am hoping you can help notify me of the status of my request.

The request was originally submitted with DARPA and given the follwing tracking number: 19-F-1917

It was then transferred to the Air Force Research Lab in mid-September of this year.

Since then, I have not heard much on the request. Here is the language of my original request, if it helps:

"
To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

All records mentioning/making reference to OpenBSD or www.openbsd.org since January 1, 2000.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires."

Let me know if you would like to speak over the phone or can help me verify that this request is in your department's hands now and if there is an estimate on when to expect any responsive records.

Regards,
- J. Ader

Sir

I have attempted numerous times to reach back out regarding this request and a need for clarification and a narrowing of scope. All records referencing openbsd.org is rather vague and can encompass quite a bit. This request was closed when I was unable to reach this requestor for more information. I am happy to open a new request if that is what you are hoping for with a new number, I will need to speak however with someone that can narrow this down for me.

Julie
