Pursuant to the California Public Records Act, I hereby request the following records:

1. the total number of use of force incidents, separated by year, from 2018-2021 (for example, 302 use of force incidents in 2018, 287 use of force incidents in 2019, etc.)

2. the total number of use of force incidents, separated by type of force and year used from 2018-2020 (for example, information that specifies the number of taser incidents in 2018, baton incidents in 2018, etc.)

When available, I would appreciate being sent individualized data for each item in this request in spreadsheet format. If individualized data are unavailable, please send information that includes aggregate statistics for the item instead.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

The City takes its responsibilities as guardians of the public’s information seriously and will make its best efforts to respond to your requests within the limits of the Public Records Act. We write to inform you that the City will need an additional fourteen (14) calendar days to respond to your request. The additional time is needed to coordinate between multiple staff members and City departments, and to search for, identify and collect, and examine a potentially voluminous amount of separate and distinct records. The City will make all reasonable efforts to provide you with a written response to your request regarding which of those records sought are in the possession of the City and otherwise disclosable by no later than 8/17/2023, and at that time the City will provide you with a more exact response. Please be further aware that if the City identifies records that are disclosable, the City will need to review these records for applicable exemptions under the law, and if necessary, redact confidential, privileged, or exempt portions of disclosable records.
