To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the California Public Records Act, I hereby request the following records:

1) From October 7, 2023 to the time that this request is processed: A copy of any takedown requests (i.e. asking a social media company to remove a post from the platform either totally or from public view) sent to any of the following companies/platforms:
- Twitter/X
- Facebook
- Instagram
- TikTok
- LinkedIn
- YouTube

I am specifically interested in posts that relate to the Israel/Gaza conflict. If you need a keyword search, you can search for the following terms:
—“Israel"
—“Gaza"
—“Hamas
—“Palestine"
—“Palestinian"
—"Students for Justice in Palestine"
—“SJP"
—“Chabad
—"Hillel”

Please limit the scope of this request to whichever person/people/team deals with sending takedown requets.

This FOI request is being filed in pursuit of a time-sensitive news story. Therefore, I ask that my request is expedited. When completing this request, please prioritize whichever records would take the least amount of time to be located and released. I would like these records in electronic format, sent via email or other digital method, and again, please release documents on a rolling basis, as they become available.

If you determine that any of the information qualifies for an exemption from disclosure, I ask you to note whether the exemption is discretionary, and if so whether it is necessary in this case to exercise your discretion to withhold the information. In any event, please provide a signed notification citing the legal authorities on which you rely if you determine that any of the information is exempt and will not be disclosed.

Also, I am a member of the news media as a reporter for Business Insider, and the requested documents are in the public interest and not being made for commercial purposes. Therefore, I ask that all fees are waived in the processing of my request. If fees associated with this request will be in excess of $25, kindly notify me in advance of fulfilling this request. As I am making this request as a journalist and this information is timely, I would appreciate your communicating with me if you have questions regarding this request.

Thanks again, and if there are any questions about my request, can provide any clarification that will help expedite the processing of my request, please contact me at email address. I am also happy to hop on the phone.

I look forward to your reply within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires and an even more prompt reply if you can make a determination without having to review the records in question.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Best,
Caroline

The Department is cognizant of its responsibilities under the Act. It recognizes the statutory scheme was enacted to maximize citizen access to the workings of government. The Act does not mandate disclosure of all documents within the government’s possession. Rather, by specific exemption and reference to other statutes, the Act recognizes that there are boundaries where the public’s right to access must be balanced against such weighty considerations as the right of privacy, a right of constitutional dimension under California Constitution, Article 1, Section 1. The law also exempts from disclosure records that are privileged or confidential or otherwise exempt under either express provisions of the Act or pursuant to applicable federal or state law, per California Government Code Sections 7927.200; 7927.700; 7923.600; 7927.705; and 7922.000.

The Department conducted a search and did not locate any records responsive to your request for A copy of any takedown requests (i.e. asking a social media company to remove a post from the platform either totally or from public.
