From: Todd Feathers

To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the California's Sunshine Amendment (Cal. Const. Art. I, § 3(b)), I hereby request the following records:

Copies of all reports, lists, or databases detailing the number and/or status of lawsuits brought against the city's police department since 2009. This should include requests for, or documentation of, funds used to cover settlement agreements, court costs, or other expenses related to lawsuits.

This request should be construed to include any document submitted to, compiled by, or in any way maintained by the city council that lists lawsuits brought against the police department between 2009-2013. If a document exists that contains the requested information for some, but not all of the above mentioned years, please include that/those document(s).

I request that fees be waived because I am a journalist -- employed by the Boston Globe and MuckRock news -- and intend to use the requested documents in the interest of educating the public and not for any commercial reasons.

I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Todd Feathers

To Whom It May Concern:

I wanted to follow up on the following Freedom of Information request, copied below, and originally submitted on Aug. 26, 2014. Please let me know when I can expect to receive a response, or if further clarification is needed.

Thank you for your help.

Hello Mr. Feathers,
Jackie forwarded you inquiry to me about records of lawsuits against the
LAPD.

The City Clerk's Office posts online all documents that we receive on
behalf of the City Council. The documents can be accessed through our
Council File Management System (CFMS) at:
http://cityclerk.lacity.org/lacityclerkconnect/index.cfm

If a report was submitted to the council summarizing all such lawsuits or
if the City Council discussed any particular lawsuit, perhaps to approve a
settlement agreement, then you should be able to locate the documents
through that online index.

However the City Attorney's Office and the LAPD may have their own records
on such lawsuits against the LAPD and I am not certain if all such lawsuits
are even heard before the City Council, so I would suggest you contact
those departments directly. You can contact them through their web pages at

http://www.atty.lacity.org/index.htm
and
http://www.lapdonline.org/

Good luck in your search and please contact me if you have any questions of
the City Clerk's Office.
