Communications
From: Linda MacLachlan
To Whom It May Concern:
Pursuant to the Connecticut Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:
Any catalog, inventory, index, log, report, or other listing of (1) the books in your possession or control which registrars used to record birth, marriages, deaths, and burials before 1900 (including any Land Records books and/or Town or Proprietors Meeting/Minutes/Record books which include any records of birth, marriages and deaths) and (2) other books, records, and documents in your possession or control which index, copy, regroup, reference or support town birth, deaths and marriages, including communications or reports of communication from ministers, justices of the peace, sextons, and other witnesses to any aspect of births, marriages, burials, and/or deaths prior to 1900.
I also request that, if possible and pursuant to Conn. Gen. Stat. § 1-212(d), fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest and not made for commercial gain. The requested documents will be processed by a representative of the news media/press and made available to the public at MuckRock.com.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 4 business days, as the statute requires.
Sincerely,
Linda MacLachlan

Hi Linda,
Vital Records does not fall under the Freedom of Information statutes because they are governed by their own statutes.
What I do have pre 1900 is as follows:
Town Record Volume 1 – (1804-1854(?)) - all hand written entries, includes vitals, meetings, notices….(very hard to read).
Vol 1 Birth Marriage Death 1847-1873 - all hand written entries
Records of Birth Marriage Death 1874-1947 – index of hand written entries (actual certificates begin 1906)
Vital records have a fee of $20.00 per certified copies for each entry (the fee would not be waived)
Sincerely,
Robin M Kenefick

Thank you for your prompt response.
The Family History Library in Salt Lake City claims that you possess “Town Records, vol. 1, 1768-1868,” (Contains minutes of town meetings, 1804-1851; records of marriages, 1768-1854; some records of births and deaths 1783-1842; strays, other miscellaneous town records.). They have made it available online at https://www.familysearch.org/search/film/008398229?cat=224999. Can you confirm that this is the same Town Record Volume 1 you just referenced?
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I can’t confirm the items on FAMILY SEARCH . ORG.
I can only confirm the items I have possession of.
Please refer to my prior e-mail pertaining to the items in my vault.

In 1936 the Columbia Town Clerk possessed "2 volumes of Vital Statistics Certificates." I assume you still have them. What years do they encompass?
Thank You,
Linda MacLachlan
