From: Mackenzie Farkus
To Whom It May Concern:
Pursuant to the Massachusetts Public Records Law, I hereby request the following records:
All documents on or related to the Boston Busing Crisis, which lasted from 1974-1988.
I am a career journalist with work that has appeared in various publications such as MuckRock, The Simmons Voice, and The Westwood Horizon. I am willing to pay any reasonable expenses associated with this request, however, as the purpose of the requested disclosure is in full conformity with the statutory requirements for a waiver of fees, I formally request such a waiver.
I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as we believe this request is in the public interest, as suggested but not stipulated by the recommendations of the Massachusetts Supervisor of Public Records. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.
I expect the request to be filled in an accessible format, including for screen readers, which provide text-to-speech for persons unable to read print. Files that are not accessible to screen readers include, for example, .pdf image files as well as physical documents.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 business days, as the statute requires.
Sincerely,
Mackenzie Farkus

Hi Mackenzie,
I reached out to our Archivist regarding your inquiry. She stated that
busing occurred more than 20 years before our Archives opened. We do no
have any related records other than the annual reports which are digitized
here http://guides.bpl.org/BostonReports/Police Boston Police Officers
were working double shifts for years, and you can see with the missed
annual reports and the diminished nature of the reports that everyone was
stretched. Have you reached out to the following agencies, as they would
most likely have some records that might prove helpful: City Archives for
the School Department and Mayor White, and with the Department of Justice,
and with the federal court.
I am cc'ing Shawn Williams, Records Access Officer for the City of Boston
in hopes that he can help you with this request.
Best of luck,
Martha
