From: Raleigh Police Department

Hello Mr. Curtis Waltman,

Please find attached information you requested from the Raleigh Police Department.

Since January 2014 when the system went live, there were 528 submissions to our facial recognition program. As of August 2017, it has produced 146 criminal investigative leads. It is important to distinguish that these are not identifications. The facial recognition program produces investigative leads after extensive peer review of any images similar to the probe image. This is done to ensure investigators make efficient use of their time and to reduce the risk of further victimization by suspects. Additionally, all of our exam have successfully completed facial comparison training, a weeklong rigorous course, provided by the FBI.

Respectfully,
Donna-maria Harris | RPD Public Affairs Manager
