Pursuant to the California Public Records Act, I hereby request the following records:

1. the total number of use of force incidents in 2022. Please include as part of this a breakdown of how many use of force incidents in 2022 were related to law enforcement operations and how many were related to correctional/custodial operations.

2. the total number of use of force incidents, separated by type of force, in 2022 (for example, information that specifies the number of taser incidents in 2022, baton incidents in 2022, etc.)

3. the total number of civilian complaints against law enforcement that were reported and the total number sustained for 2022.

4. the total number of civilian complaints alleging law enforcement use of excessive force that were reported and the total number sustained for 2022.

5. the total number of civilian complaints alleging biased policing or racial profiling that were reported and the total number sustained for 2022.

6. the total number of civilian complaints alleging criminal conduct that were reported and the total number sustained for 2022.

7. the total number of officer-involved shootings in 2022, both fatal and non-fatal.

8. the total number of people who the sheriff’s department used force against, broken down by race/ethnicity, in 2022.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

Response to Request Number 3 For the calendar year 2022, a total of 138 complaints of misconduct were reported to the Sheriff's Office, and 11 were sustained. Request Number 4:
The total number of civilian complaints alleging law enforcement use of excessive force that were reported and the total number sustained for 2022. Response to Request Number 4 Out of the 138 complaints, 18 complaints were use of matters, and one (1) was sustained. Request Number 5:

The Sheriff's Office responds to your public records request as follows: We have located the records responsive to your request. The records are available in the Records Request System.  Please log in to your online account and retrieve the records. Additional information/comments are provided in bold print below.
1. The total number of use of force incidents in 2022. Please include as part of this a breakdown of how many use of force incidents in 2022 were related to law enforcement operations and how many were related to correctional/custodial operations. In the attachments, law enforcement operations are identified as Field Operations Division (FOD) and Community Programs. Correctional/custodial operations are identified in a summary provide by the Custody Operations Division. We do not have a document showing the totals.
2. The total number of use of force incidents, separated by type of force, in 2022 (for example, information that specifies the number of taser incidents in 2022, baton incidents in 2022, etc.) In the attachments, the Custody Operations Division prepared a summary separated by type of force. The Field Operations Division and Community Programs provided use of force logs that show the type of force used.
3. The total number of civilian complaints against law enforcement that were reported and
the total number sustained for 2022. There were138 total complaints of misconduct and 11 were sustained. (The majority of our “civilian” complaints are from inmate grievances and/or custody
initiated by administration.)
4. The total number of civilian complaints alleging law enforcement use of excessive force
that were reported and the total number sustained for 2022. Out of the 138 complaints, 18
of them were of Use of Force matters and (1) one sustained.
5. The total number of civilian complaints alleging biased policing or racial profiling that were
reported and the total number sustained for 2022. See the Internal Affairs Annual Report.
6. The total number of civilian complaints alleging criminal conduct that were reported and
the total number sustained for 2022. The Internal Affairs Unit did not have any criminal investigations into staff for 2022.
7. The total number of officer-involved shootings in 2022, both fatal and non-fatal. The Sheriff's Office did
not have any officer involved shootings in 2022.
8. The total number of people who the sheriff’s department used force against, broken down
by race/ethnicity, in 2022. This information is not collected. This completes the Sheriff's Office response to your records request, and your request is now closed.
