Ahead of the December installation of Kehinde Wiley’s “Rumors of War” at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, we thought we’d see what people have to say so far.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts occupies that most treasured space where public opinion can be excavated through public records requests. As a state agency, the museum’s budget documents, meeting minutes, and complaints from visitors about its art are at our oily fingertips.

Two hundred pages into the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s copious file on the famed physicist Richard Feynman, and the reader is treated to a quite the surprise: A bizarre collage of what appears to be Feynman’s face alongside large swaths of redacted text, with a few cryptic phrases like “doubt everything” and “is a God” left intact. It is unclear if the redaction are original, or are the work of the FBI.

Ellsworth Kelly spent nearly all of his 92 years creating geometrically-concerned works of abstract and colorful art - a focus he tuned for some time as a Camouflage Technician for the U.S. Army during World War II. But when he applied to participate in the European Recovery Program - popularly known as the Marshall Plan - he generated 50-odd pages in the files of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, not for his military exploits but for concerns that an art school friendship might have been something more.
