Haters: Documenting Extremist and Hate Groups
Exposing extremist hate groups through government documents, ranging from the small time racist groups to the domestic terrorist branches of the KKK. This project takes an inclusive approach of identifying hate groups, regardless of whether they focus on race, sexual identity, religion, etc.
This project also examines the relationship between the FBI and civil rights groups that monitored hate groups and provided information to the Bureau after its ability to infiltrate or even monitor right-wing and extremist groups were strongly curtailed in the wake of COINTELPRO.
FBI files on the White Nationalist group the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas describe how a policy of segregation helped turn a prison gang into a paramilitary organization of domestic terrorists.
