Haters: Documenting Extremist and Hate Groups

Documenting extremist and hate groups through government documents, ranging from the small time racist groups to the domestic terrorist branches of the KKK. This project takes an inclusive approach of identifying hate groups, regardless of whether they focus on race, sexual identity, religion, etc. Many of the groups were identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

This project also examines the relationship between the FBI and civil rights groups that monitored hate groups and provided information to the Bureau after its ability to infiltrate or even monitor right-wing and extremist groups were strongly curtailed in the wake of COINTELPRO.

Back in 2016, Emma Best filed a FOIA request for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s files on the infamous white supremacist website Stormfront. After two and half years of processing, the FBI finally responded, releasing just 104 pre-processed pages. What’s more, according to the cover letter accompanying the release, there were additional records, but the Bureau simply couldn’t find them.
