Pursuant to the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

Copies of all reports, lists, or databases detailing the number and/or status of lawsuits brought against the university police department since 2016. This should include requests for, or documentation of, funds used to cover settlement agreements, court costs, or other expenses related to lawsuits.

This request should be construed to include any document submitted to, compiled by, or in any way maintained by the department that lists lawsuits brought against the university police department between 2016-2020. If a document exists that contains the requested information for some, but not all of the above mentioned years, please include that/those document(s).

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Code § 2.2-3704(A)(4).  If additional time, beyond the seven-work-day period, is needed in order to fulfill your request, we will make reasonable efforts to reach an agreement with you for records production as required under FOIA.  Va. Code §§ 2.2-3700 and 2.2-3704(C). Additionally, UVA may recover its actual costs incurred in processing your request.  This includes costs incurred in accessing, duplicating, supplying, or searching for the records you have requested, including, but not limited to, the costs of reviewing records to determine whether or not they are public records responsive to your request, exempt under FOIA, or may not lawfully be disclosed pursuant to some other provision of law (See Va. Code §2.2-3704(F)). If costs are likely to exceed $200, as permitted by FOIA, we do require advanced payment prior to fulfilling a request.  Va. Code § 2.2-3704(H).  If costs are likely to be less than $200, actual costs incurred by UVA will be billed to you after you receive your response.  In either case, I will let you know of any costs in advance. Code §2.2-3704(A), “all public records shall be open to citizens of the Commonwealth, representatives of newspapers and magazines with circulation in the Commonwealth, and representatives of radio and television stations broadcasting in or into the Commonwealth during the regular office hours of the custodian of such records.” If you do not meet either of these qualifications, your request may not be fulfilled. If you are a member of the media, can you identify the newspaper or magazine with circulation in the Commonwealth that you represent in connection with this request, or can you identify the radio and television station broadcasting in or into the Commonwealth that you represent in connection with this request?
