To Whom It May Concern:
Pursuant to the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:
1. A copy of any records generated or received pursuant to any policy concerning challenges to curricular, instructional, or library materials.
2. A copy of any complaints (including informal complaints), and any records generated as a result of the complaints, where the complaint led to a change in status of any book or material in a school library.
3. A copy of any current policy concerning challenges to curricular, instructional, or library materials.
4. A copy of any public records requests received concerning books, library materials, or curricular materials and any records produced in response to the request.
The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 5 business days, as the statute requires.

This is to confirm receipt of your Muckrock FOIA Request #143529-71143675 received via email to request records under the provisions of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act<https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacodepopularnames/virginia-freedom-of-information-act/> (V-FOIA). I have forwarded the request to staff in the appropriate department and will respond within five business days. Because Arlington Public Schools offices and schools will be closed April 3-7 for Spring Break, this means I will respond further no later than next Wednesday, April 12, with a response regarding the available records and, if required, an estimate of the charges to respond to your request.
The APS fees are calculated as allowed by the provisions in the Code of Virginia for V-FOIA, and in accordance with the fee charges outlined on the APS FOIA webpage<https://www.apsva.us/school-community-relations/foia-requests/>. Fees never exceed the actual cost APS incurs to search for, access, redact, duplicate, or make available the requested records. Once you have been informed of any fees involved, we will ask you to confirm whether you wish to proceed or to revise your request in any way.

Staff in two departments have responded to your request.
* Library Services staff will require four (4) hours to respond to your request at the hourly rate of $64.34, totaling $257.36.
* Student Services staff will require five (5) hours to respond to your request at the hourly rate of $69.23, totaling $346.15.
Therefore, the total estimated cost to respond to your request is $603.51.
Arlington Public Schools (APS) strives to fulfill its responsibility to be transparent by ensuring ready access to records related to APS operations and meetings. As explained in the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, fees are often incurred to respond to FOIA requests. The APS fees which are explained in on the APS FOIA webpage<https://www.apsva.us/school-community-relations/foia-requests/> never exceed the actual cost APS incurs to search for, access, duplicate or make available the requested records. However, there may be ways to help you refine your request to reduce the fees.
