To Whom It May Concern:
Pursuant to the Vermont public records law (1 V.S.A. §§ 315-320), I hereby request the following records:
A copy of all data related to citations for marijuana possession in the state of Vermont on the state and local levels. I am specifically seeking records from January 2011 to the date that this request is processed. In addition, I am requesting a copy of any and all reports or studies generated by the state that discuss marijuana citations.
I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.
In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 5 business days, as the statute requires.
Thank you for contacting the Vermont Department of Public Safety, Criminal Justice Services. Your public record request was forwarded to me to collect and review the documents you seek. That being said, before I can proceed, I need you to please clarify your request for "all data related to citations for marijuana possession in the state of Vermont on the state and local levels." It is necessary for you to be specific as possible about the exact type of records you are requesting.
For example, are you looking for statewide arrest statistics for marijuana civil tickets and/or criminal violations? Or are you looking for copies of police reports? While formulating the scope of your request, please keep in mind that the Department of Public Safety is not the record custodian for local law enforcement agencies.
Since your contact information was not provided with your request, please call me, so we can discuss further. My contact information is listed below. If I do not hear back from you within 10 business days, I will consider your request withdrawn.
I look forward to hearing back from you. Sincerely, Stephanie
