Dear Tino Struckmann:

Thank you for submitting your Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to
the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) via *FOIAonline*. We
received your request on January 19, 2022. Your request concerns
photographs or other information relating to jet plane producing tunnels in
Linz, Austria.

This office handles FOIA and Privacy Act requests for the National Archives
and Records Administration's *operational* records (records created by this
agency). Because your FOIA request is for records that may
be archival records (records created by or originated in a different agency
but that may have been transferred to the legal custody of NARA), we have
forwarded it to our *Office of Research Services, Textual Reference
(RR2RR)* staff
who handle FOIA requests for textual archival records and to the Still
PIctures Branch who handle FOIA requests for archival still photography
records.

Since *Research Services* does not process FOIA requests through
*FOIAOnline*, we removed your request from the *FOIAOnline* website.
Textual Reference and Still Pictures will assign you a new tracking number,
and respond directly to you. In the future, if you need to follow up with
these offices, please contact them at the address below, or electronically

Dear Mr. Struckmann,

This is in response to your Freedom of Information Act request of January
19, 2022 for records relating to the series of underground tunnels code
named “Bergkristal”, “Kellerbau”, and “Esche” near Linz, Austria. Your
request was received in this office on January 26, 2022 and assigned FOIA
case number 22-17480.

Your request has been forwarded to the Still Pictures Branch for a
response. That office is cited as the custodial unit of the photograph you
referenced under US Air Force Number 94960AC.

We searched in Record Group 342 – Records of U.S. Air Force Commands,
Activities, and Organizations but did not locate additional records with
the number 94960AC nor any other material under the code names listed
above.

We also searched in Record Group 242 – National Archives Collection of
Foreign Records Seized under the tunnel names but did not locate relevant
records. We searched for records relating to seized tunnels in Austria but
were unsuccessful.

We do not consider this a denial of your FOIA request. However, if you are
not satisfied with our action on this request, your options for appeal and
dispute resolution are outlined in the attached enclosure.

This concludes the processing of your request.

Sincerely,

LAUREN THEODORE

From: National Archives and Records Administration

Dear Tino Struckmann,

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information Act request
sent on January
19, 2022 for records in the custody of the National Archives and Records
Administration. Your request was received in this office on January 19,
2022 and has been assigned the FOIA Case Number 22-16297.

Your request indicated that you are interested in photographs of
tunnel complexes located in or near Linz, Austria (Bergkristal, Kellerbau,
Esche I and II). We conducted a search in the Records of the Office of the
Chief Signal Officer (Record Group 111) and the Records of U.S. Air Force
Commands, Activities, and Organizations (Record Group 342). Unfortunately,
we were unable to locate any images.

The item you referenced in your request (U.S. Air Force Number 94960AC,
available online at https://catalog.archives.gov/id/204841741) is not
located within a report. Rather, it is part of a larger series of
approximately 144,000 photographic prints, arranged roughly by subject. The
photographic print in question is located in the folder "WWII, AUSTRIA,
CAPTURED MATERIEL" with six other prints, which may also be viewed online:
https://catalog.archives.gov/search?q=%22AUSTRIA,%20CAPTUREDMATERIEL%22&f.ancestorNaIds=542351&sort=localId%20asc.
The full series description is available to read at:
https://catalog.archives.gov/id/542351. This collection was intended to
provide photographic documentation of a broad selection of activities and
personnel of the U.S. Air Force and its predecessors, and while it offers
considerable research value, it should not be mistaken as comprehensive,
and the presence of one photograph does not invariably indicate that there
are more of the same or similar. In this case, using available finding aids
and indexes, we could not locate any additional photographs similar
to 94960AC in Record Group 342.

When photographs are interfiled among textual records, such as reports, the
photographs remain with the textual records, which, for the time period
indicated in your request, are in the custody of the Textual Reference
Branch at College Park (RR2RR). Your request was already forwarded to that
office, though you may follow up with them directly:
archives2reference@nara.gov.

This completes the processing of your request. If you have any questions,
the Still Picture Reference Team will be happy to assist you. Written
inquiries may be directed to the Still Picture Reference Team, RDSS, Room
5360, National Archives and Records Administration, 8601 Adelphi Road,
College Park, Maryland 20740-6001. Our phone number is 301-837-0561 and fax
301-837-3621. We can also be reached by email at stillpix@nara.gov.

We do not consider this a denial of your FOIA request. However, if you are
not satisfied with our action on this request, your options for appeal and
dispute resolution are outlined in the attached document.

Sincerely,
Alexandra Lange

I would respectfully like to appeal the closure of this request as it is incomplete.

There is a significant amount of documentation within the Air force, Technical department, Intelligence, the OSS and CIA files on this I request released. We know this from citing other reports referring to it, and people on the ground participating in making this documentation and photos.

However also when it comes to my many requests of the documentation of the underground tunnel factories, I request the ENTIRE amount of documentation and PHOTOGRAPHS of these tunnels. Every one of these systems were extensively documented and photographed, video filmed and catalogued with inventory. I am requesting these historically important photographs from all of these, remembering these include the most technically advanced factories of Nazi Germany such as Kellerbau, Bergkristall and Dora Mittelbau as well as those communication and underground bunkers in Jonastal and Ordruff. These were all documented by the OSS, Technical services, Air-force intelligence, Army intelligence. even the ALSOS teams full reports from these have not yet been made public.

Furthermore 3 detailed reports were produced before 1947 about these underground facilities, these included photos from these. Only one partial have been released.

The OSS made reports on these tunnel systems dated 1944 and 45, in all the photographic documentation is missing but referred to, the British air-force as well as US flew photo missions over all these locations throughout the war and after.
Post was the Army technical department and OSS and Air-force reconnaissance department made detailed reports with inventory and photos of these systems. Also other military departments did the same, so reports and photos was made and must exist given the importance of these installations.

Given the secrecy of these tunnel systems, the pending cold war and those involved it stands to reason these files are in existence
They are of extreme historical importance and no longer should be kept secret.

Please look again, and if these are found and still classified at let me know so I can the make proper legal request for declassification.

Tino
