Russel Neiss:

Good evening, excuse this delayed response to your inquiry regarding DOJ-2019-006048. Currently, we are continuing to search for potentially responsive records fourteen custodians of the Office of Public Affairs, which I estimate the search should be completed in two to three months. The delay is due to the backlog of our eDiscovery search queue. We are currently processing quite a bit of requests that are seeking email records, some of which were received before your request. Should the search be completed sooner; you will be advised. Once the search is completed, we can provide an estimated date of completion for processing this request, including discussing interim responses. I understand the passage of time since you submitted this FOIA request; however, please be assured we are working on this case and will communicate with you when we have an update. Thank you for your continued patience with the processing of this request. For any questions or future communications pertaining to this request, you may contact this Office regarding this request.

Thank you,
Valeree Villanueva

Good morning Russel Neiss,

This is concerning your above-referenced request for various records concerning the Department of Justice's Summit on Combating Anti-Semitism. This request was recently reassigned to me for processing. Please be advised that I have completed a search for records responsive to your request. Upon review, many of the items from your request have already been posted on the Department's website and other places as listed below. If this material satisfies your request, please let me know by responding to this email.

Regarding the remaining material located in my search, I should be able to process and release the media advisory and other invitation-type material I located relatively quickly. The item that will take a significant time to process is the registration list. Because this list includes attendees from throughout the federal government, we will need to consult each separate federal agency/entity concerning their information. Based on my experience, some of these entities take many months and even years to consult. If you were to eliminate this list from your request, I believe I could have a response to you by the end of April. If not, I'm certain it will be many months before I can provide our final response. Please let me know how you'd like to proceed regarding this remaining material. If I have not heard from you after thirty business days, I will assume you are no longer interested in this remaining material and will close your request administratively. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this matter.

Thank you for your time,

Dear Eric,

I have already been waiting nearly four years for this request, I’m happy to wait longer for you to fulfill your legal obligations.

I would still like the registration list, but do please release the other material as it becomes available.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Best,
Russel

From: Department of Justice, Office of Public Affairs

Good morning,

As I advised in my email of March 28, 2023, the remaining material requires consultations with many other federal entities. Once those consultations are sent we have no control over their progress in other offices. While consultations take ON AVERAGE 6-8 weeks, the actual time required varies widely and accordingly any estimate should be considered wildly inaccurate. If you were to exclude the registration list I described in my March 28, 2023 email, I estimate that we’d have a response to you by the end of August, 2023. Without excluding that list any estimate would be wildly inaccurate, but I’d estimate our response to you by the end of September, 2024.

To give you some idea of why your request is taking so long to process, please be advised that as of today, this office has 1560 open FOIA requests. Your request falls at #336 in terms of age, meaning that there are 335 open requests that are older than yours. Of the 101 cases currently assigned to me, yours is #35 in terms of age. Finally, be advised that this Office only has 5 analysts to process these requests.

Thank you,
Eric

From: Department of Justice, Office of Public Affairs

Please see my email of July 12, 2023. The only change to the status as I provided you then is that now your request is #34 of 103 in terms of age.
