Crowdfund Request: Strom Thurmond (FBI)

Share Embed Help

Staunch segregationist Strom Thurmond had a record-setting Senate run - nearly 50 years - and a monumentally-long life - he lived to be a 100 - during which he also amassed many more pages of FBI assistance than most ever do: 4600.

Of these, roughly 650, which include details of his attempts to discredit Martin Luther King, Jr., have been previously released.

But there remain thousands that have yet to reach the public, the majority of which the agency claims document the many threats against the Senator’s life.

MuckRock wants to get every last scrap on the controversial Congressman from South Carolina. Each dollar donated will help us release these historical materials to the public in perpetuity.

Backed by Paul Kruczynski.

$25.00 raised out of $149.50.

Hi there,

I would like to reopen this request on Strom Thurmond and authorize payment up to $70. However, I would like to receive a revised invoice for all total available materials when possible, in order to reevaluate whether I would like to provide full payment. If any materials have been preprocessed, provision of those at no cost would be appreciated. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do.

Requests are processed in the order in which they are received through our multi-track processing system, and the FBI receives a voluminous amount of requests on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis. Requests are divided into two primary tracks--simple (under 50 pages of potentially responsive documents) and complex (over 50 pages of potentially responsive documents). Our complex requests are further divided into medium, large, and extra-large sub-tracks. Simple track requests typically require the least amount of time to process.

Currently, simple track cases average approximately 181 days from the date of receipt for processing. Requests in the medium processing track are currently averaging 232 days from the date of receipt for processing, those in the large processing track are currently averaging approximately 659 days, and those in the extra-large track are averaging 998 days.

From: Bronson, Rebecca (RMD) (FBI)

Good morning Ms. Lipton,

I'm contacting you about the FOIA request you made for records concerning Strom Thurmond. As you may recall, the FBI located approximately 4600 pages that are potentially responsive to your request. Of those, 644 pages had been previously processed. The remaining pages and audio/visual material have not been processed. Of the material that has not yet been processed, approximately 2918 pages and the audio/visual material pertain to threats made against the subject. Eliminating those files and the next two smallest files would move the request out of the large track. Would you be willing to reduce the scope of you request in this fashion?

Please let me know if you would like to potentially reduce the scope of your request. I can be reached via email at rbronson@fbi.gov, or you may call me at 540-868-1695, Monday - Friday between the hours of 7:00am and 3:00pm Eastern time.

From: Beryl Lipton

Ms. Bronson,

I apologize for the delay in my response. I would very much like to obtain all of the available materials. I hope your office doesn't mind the desire for the materials in their entirety; I understand this will take more time for your department, and I very much appreciate your patience. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do or if I should submit payment soon. If you have other questions, feel free to give me a call in the office: 617-299-1832.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Best wishes,
Beryl

Dear Ms. Lipton,

No payment is owed at this time. Should all of the 3978 potentially responsive pages and audio CD remaining in this request be processed, you would owe $130 (8 CDs at $15 each, less $5 credit for the first CD, plus an additional $15 for the media CD). You indicated a willingness to pay $70 for the processing of this request. To proceed with processing all potentially responsive material at this time, please indicate your willingness to pay all costs associated with this request.

A copy of documents responsive to the request.

From: Federal Bureau of Investigation

Good morning Ms. Lipton,

This is in reference to your Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request # 1335300-1 for FBI records concerning Strom Thurmond. We are reaching out to you to determine if you are still interested in these records, or, if at this time, you would consider reducing the size of your request from 3978 pages to under 950 pages, which will move the request to the medium track. Reducing the size of your request may accelerate the processing and allow for a more timely receipt of the information you seek, as it could potentially place your request into a smaller, faster processing track. This may also reduce duplication costs, if applicable. Currently, there is a significant time involved in processing large track cases.

Requests are processed in the order in which they are received through our multi-track processing system, and the FBI receives a voluminous amount of requests on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis. Requests are divided into two primary tracks -simple (under 50 pages of potentially responsive documents) and complex (over 50 pages of potentially responsive documents). Complex requests are further divided into medium (51-949 pages), (large 950-8000 pages), and extra-large (over 8,000 pages) sub-tracks are based upon request size.

Please contact me with regards to this inquiry to let me know if you are still interested in receiving records for this request either in full (the remaining records), or reducing the request to the medium track (not to exceed 949 pages). If you reduce the size, you can request the additional records with a new FOIA request upon completion of this one.

Thank you for your time and patience. We hope to hear from you over the next few days so we can discuss these options.

Best regards,

From: Federal Bureau of Investigation

Good afternoon Ms. Lipton,

Thanks for your email regarding this request. The request is currently closed. We tried to contact you by email on November 7 and November 14, 2018 to see if you were still interested in material from this request. We then mailed a letter to you asking if you still wished to receive material from this request and advising that if no response was received within 30 days, we would assume that you no longer wished to receive material and the request would be closed.

Please visit the eFOIA portal<https://www.fbi.gov/services/information-management/foipa/requesting-fbi-records> to have the request re-opened. We would be happy to work with you on a scope reduction once the request has been re-opened.

Best regards,
