From Jason Smathers on Sept. 6, 2011:

I find it difficult to believe that the FBI has no record of Silk Road. The Silk Road Anonymous Marketplace is a well known internet marketplace for illegal drugs, guns, credit card fraud, etc.

I ask that you do an additional search, tasking the appropriate parts of your agency that handle such crimes.

Thank you very much.

Regards,
Jason Smathers

Hi David,

Were this request (1170137-000) and (1170137-002) combined into one response? They were largely similar, but the latter was originally submitted to the DoJ which then referred it to the FBI.

Thanks for your help clarifying.

From "Sobonya, David P." <David.Sobonya@ic.fbi.gov> to Jason Smathers on June 12, 2012:

Dear Mr. Smathers,

The last three digits after the hyphen (-) of the first seven digits are used when a request was closed and needs to be reopened. The initial request was assigned FOIA #1170137-000. That request was closed and reopened and was assigned FOIA Request Number #1170137-001. Again, 001, means it was closed and reopened. The last three digits (002), indicates the request was closed and reopened for a second time. When a request is reopened using the same FOIA request number, only the last three digits after the hyphen change as illustrated above.

Please contact me if you require further assistance.

Thank you,
