To Whom It May Concern:

This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:

All internal reports, damage assessments, notes, official agency histories, and files related to the investigation of Ronald William Pelton, an agency analyst who was jailed for espionage in 1986. Book IV of a redacted agency history, "American Cryptology during the Cold War, 1945-1989", discusses NSA officers debriefing Pelton following his conviction, but little detail is included. I request all records of these debriefing sessions, as well as any related documents about the Pelton case and its impact on the agency.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes. I am a freelance journalist (www.jacobsilverman.com) researching espionage cases from 1986, the so-called Year of the Spy. Pelton's recent release from federal prison has rekindled interest in his case, which has become an important, but under-examined, artifact of Cold War history.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Jacob Silverman
