From: Parsons, Bobbie

Hi Mr. Morisy,

This is in response to your Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request submitted in FOIAonline on May 6, 2013 to the Department of Commerce requesting "a copy of all responses sent to Congressional committees between Jan. 1, 2008 and the date that this request is processed."

Your request, as presently framed, "a copy of all responses sent to Congressional committees between Jan. 1, 2008", could generate a substantial number (hundreds of thousands) of documents that would have to be reviewed for disclosure under the FOIA. This review for disclosure would entail substantial expenditures of resources and time and would likely result in undue burden to the Department.

Therefore, we are trying to clarify what it is that you are requesting. With this in mind, a suggestion would you be to begin with a log or index or even just a copy of the incoming and outgoing correspondence?

In addition, we have found that a request was sent to four of the Department's bureaus (Census, National Institute of Science and Technology, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Patent and Trademark Office), as well. We will be consolidating these into one FOIA request and, therefore one response from the Department.

If you need assistance in the narrowing of your request, you may return an email to me at BParsons@doc.gov<mailto:BParsons@doc.gov> or you may reach me at 202-482-3257.

Hi Mr. Morisy,

This is in response to your inquiry, yesterday, October 30 2013, to Catrina Purvis into the status of your FOIA request DOC-OS-2013-000907.

According to your e-mail sent to Ms. Purvis yesterday, you previously sent inquiries into the status of this FOIA on a monthy basis.

I have no record of receiving these emails you sent in July, August, September and yesterday, please tell me the email address you were using to send these inquiries so that we can be assured to fix the problem or make sure you have the correct email address to send your inquiries.

Please be assured, it is not a problem to re-open your FOIA request and begin the processing of it. I would be happy to accommodate you by sending you the logs, as you have agreed to receive, in the email sent to Catrina Purvis.

Hi Mr. Morisy,

Just sending this email to verify the narrowing of your original request that we are beginning to process today per our conversations via email yesterday. You tried to send us an email June 27, 2013 saying "Thanks for your help narrowing this request. I agree to narrow it to a log or index of communications, as suggested.

Just wanting to confirm that the search is narrowed to "a log or index of communications".

From: MuckRock

Hello,

Yes, that narrowing is acceptable.

Thank you!
