To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

Any and all records (including but not limited to physical documents, emails, text messages, word processor files, PDF files, etc.) that discuss the decision by the Treasury Department and/or the Internal Revenue Service to include President Donald Trump's name on stimulus checks that the federal government plans to send to many Americans to stimulate the economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Specifically, I am searching for records that contain information about how the decision was reached to include President Trump's name on the stimulus checks.

I seek records that were created between March 23, 2020 and the date this FOIA request is processed (inclusive of those dates).

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Christopher Tidmarsh

From: Department of Treasury

Good morning,

Treasury is in receipt of your recently submitted FOIA request.

Thank you,

Cawana

From: Department of Treasury

Christopher Tidemarsh,

I am contacting you in regards to your FOIA request, case F20113-0007, that was referred to the IRS by the Department of Treasury on April 20, 2020. Since you are requesting records from the IRS and the Department of Treasury, you will be receiving a separate response from the IRS and the Department of the Treasury.

Your IRS FOIA case number is F20113-0007.

Regarding your request, it appears to be overly broad and would require a search of our entire agency. Would you be willing to limit the search to the following custodians:

1. IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig
2. IRS Chief Counsel Michael Desmond

Please feel free to contact me at the number below if you have any questions or would like to discuss this matter.

Thank you,

Hello,

Yes, I would be willing to limit my search to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig and IRS Chief Counsel Michael Desmond. Thank you for asking.

Sincerely,

Christopher Tidmarsh

From: Department of Treasury

Hello,

We are currently working to process your request as soon as possible and sent you the attached extension letter on May 15, 2020.

However, it appears you are intending to send this follow up to the Department of Treasury. This is the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Treasury has a separate FOIA office. The request number in your subject line appears to come from Treasury as well. Your IRS FOIA request is F20113-0007.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

Hello,

I apologize for the confusion with the Treasury case number and the IRS case number. I believe it was an automated email you received. If you receive any more emails from me or from Muckrock asking about the progress of Treasury request #2020-04-085, then please interpret it as a request for the progress of IRS request F20113-0007.

Sincerely,

Christopher Tidmarsh

Christopher Tidmarsh,

I received the attached correspondence from you. I have been sending you updates on this case to mailbox requests@muckrock.com<mailto:requests@muckrock.com> as indicated in your original request but the attached correspondence indicates you want correspondence to be sent to: requests@muckrock.com<mailto:requests@muckrock.com>

I believe you sent the same request to the IRS (me) and to Treasury. Treasury then referred the case to the IRS. I can use either mailbox, I just want to make sure you have been receiving the updates.
Please advise. You can also call me at the number below to discuss.
